Is Buying a Used Spray Rig a Bargain?

For experienced spray foam contractors, buying a used rig can be a bargain. For those new to the industry, it can be a costly mistake. Those new in the spray foam industry too often assume they can save money by buying used equipment. Used spray rigs that are priced right can often be purchased at about half of what they cost new; however, there can be many unseen issues that most new to the industry do not know to look for.

Buying Used Equipment Means that You are on Your Own

According to experts in the spray foam industry, inexperienced companies (with less than two years of experience) should avoid buying used rigs and equipment. New contractors initially have a learning curve to overcome. Dealing with equipment complexities, repairs and unexpected expenses can be enough to discourage new contractors from succeeding. A major concern with used equipment is how it was used, maintained and/or stored. If the system was not flushed properly or with the appropriate solvents, the system could be blocked by foam and/or have crystallization. These are serious problems that can cost a contractor dearly. Heater defects are another issue. This may not be readily apparent until colder weather hits and more heat is needed.

When equipment has not been maintained, flushed or properly stored, it is likely that the entire A-side of the machine, heater, hoses, and transfer pumps will need to be replaced. Therefore, by the time repairs have been completed and hoses have been replaced, the contractor could have purchased new equipment, with warranties, tech support and in most cases free training.

Electrical components, such as heated hose assemblies or circuit boards can go out unexpectedly. This will cause down time while the parts are obtained and installed.

Used equipment is not always readily available in close proximity to the purchaser. This means that you may have to travel to where the equipment is located and have an expert check it to be sure it is in working order.

Machines, proportioners and reactors are designed to perform certain tasks for certain types of projects. For example, a low pressure machine is not the appropriate choice for spraying high volumes of material such as on roof decks nor can it be used to spray Polyurea. Both require high pressure machines and hoses.

What type of power do you require? Shore power rigs depend on a local electrical source while rigs that have the appropriate generator can generate their own power in most any location. Always be sure that your generator is compatible with your machine.

Does the rig contain everything you need to start spraying projects? Have a complete checklist of what you will need and compare it with what the used rig contains. You will still need masks, suits, gloves, and all required PPE, first-aid kit, and a fire extinguisher. It is always a good idea to have spare parts, O-rings, gun tips, spare mixing chambers, filters and grease for the spray gun, proper tools, cleaning solvents and other supplies.

Value versus price. If you do not know the value of the used equipment, you could pay too much. Some machines may be outdated and its parts difficult to obtain. It is best to consult with an experienced expert to determine the value of the equipment.

Refurbished Equipment

Refurbished equipment may be an alternative to used equipment from a private owner. Reputable companies that refurbish used equipment generally provide a warranty on the replacement parts. In most cases, they do not provide free formal training nor tech support. There is always the risk that some other part of the equipment could fail.

Buying Used Equipment can be a Value for the Experienced

Companies that have excellent equipment mechanics understand what to look for in used equipment. They understand how to do most of the repairs themselves and where parts can be obtained. They know how to anticipate a problem, trouble-shoot and do preventative maintenance. Lastly, they understand the value of the equipment.

Become a Success by Buying Smart

Never buy equipment on impulse. Take your time, do your homework, and consult with experienced contractors, consultants and/or industry professionals. Make sure the equipment you purchase is in working condition, know where parts can be obtained and only purchase equipment and materials that are designed for types of projects you wish to do. Compare the risk and potential cost of buying used versus buying new equipment. As the technology of equipment in the industry has improved over time, there are now many types of new equipment that may be less expensive than buying used. Certainly, buying new greatly reduces your risk.
