Problem: The Neil Armstrong Museum was celebrating 50 years since Neil was the first man to walk on the moon, but the concrete exterior was leaking profusely above ground and below ground. The exterior was darkened by mold, and mildew that penetrated deep inside concrete. There were stains from efflorescence inside and outside. The interior air quality was musty, and laden with mildew. The temperatures were difficult to control, and the utility costs were very high.
The museum is an historic landmark in Wapakoneta, Ohio (Neil’s birthplace). It houses priceless artifacts from his exemplary career and the “Space Race” of the 1960s. It includes personal items like toys from his 1940s childhood home in Wapakoneta area farm, model rocketry projects and diplomas, his space suit and helmets. It even has life-size replica of the Gemini space capsule he first orbited the earth in.
Laura Little from Garman Miller Architects was charged with a workable, affordable, and permanent solution. She contacted Steve Eddy (Steve Eddy Associates) to discuss options to preserve the walls. After careful consideration of all the problems, Eddy recommended a combination of a revolutionary, new Polyurea coating covered with colored aggregate to keep the look of the building, stop the leaking, and give the exterior a maintenance free, attractive and extremely durable finish that would not fade.
Astronaut, military pilot and educator, Neil Armstrong made history on July 20, 1969, by becoming the first man to walk on the moon.
Laura (Little) selected a desert tan polyurea base color covered by Biscuit colored aggregate that was spray into the polyurea as it cured.
Eddy specified a very high pressure wash of the concrete.
Application of “Water Chasing Polyurea Primer” to penetrate into the damp concrete and form a complete vapor barrier.
Once the primer was applied to the damp concrete and the vapor barrier was intact, Desert Sand Polyurea was applied.
Then, the colored aggregate.
The complete project took less than 1 month. The problems were solved. The Museum was satisfied, and the project was
completed in time for the 50th anniversary celebration and Grand Re-opening. The final results were spectacular!
