Loves the SPF Industry
After two years as an applicator in the SPF industry, Cherilyn Giles couldn’t be happier. Cherilyn, a military veteran and mother of 5, originally learned how to spray foam by working with her husband when the company he worked for couldn’t find enough skilled workers. “It was tough at first”, explained Cherilyn. “Some of my fellow employees were not happy working with a woman. I had to maintain a positive attitude about myself despite what others thought of me, how badly they treated me or how much they tried to discourage me. Fortunately, there were some forward-thinking people who embraced me and were happy to have me work with them. This opened the door for more learning opportunities, and that helped me grow and thrive.” she said.

Despite the difficulties of learning a new trade and raising five children, Cherilyn persisted in her goal to become the best she can be. “I like busting my butt and the feeling of accomplishment when I’ve done a good job. I have been fully accepted at my new position as an applicator for another company. I’ve sprayed roof decks, metal buildings, attics, crawl spaces, walls, troubleshoot and maintain the equipment—you name it. I’ve even been given the responsibility of training others. I Love being a Woman in the SPF Industry and conquering the challenges that come my way. Bring it on!” she said.

“I want to inspire women to work in the SPF industry,” My advice for those who are thinking about working as an SPF applicator is to be prepared to work in hot weather, expect that there will be more work than you anticipate, stay safe, pay attention to what you’re doing and your environment, get plenty of hand-on training, and expect to solve problems and meet challenges on the job. Maintaining your equipment properly is vital for productivity. Learn everything you can. When things get tough, a little humor can help get you through the day. Success will come if you have the right attitude and never let anything stand in your way,” said Cherilyn.
